Why does America need a global health policy for the Pandemic Age?
It doesn’t. America’s pandemic health policy should be responsive to the needs and concerns of Americans.
Can you imagine what healthcare would look like if our personal physicians were in D.C.? You, the individual, would disappear as a consideration. Instead, all decisions would be made off a spreadsheet by unaccountable committees. It would be like insurance, only much worse.
Global entities, if they exist, should exist only to share data (not conclusions or direction) and resources. For a future pandemic, I would like to think local communities have their own plan and that they are not relying on the WHO. If there is a global resource, I pray that there is more than one. Or, it will tend to a role of unrestrained decision-making, and again, we will be back to spreadsheets.
Power must always be checked. Otherwise, it will grow authoritarian.
