What is an essay on “freedom of speech can be abused”?
Unfortunately, any person that writes an essay with the phrase “freedom of speech can be abused” as its premise does not possess an entirely free mind.
Individuals living primarily within their habit-brain (SEE BELOW) do not easily accommodate conflicting ideas. That is, ideas directly in conflict with what they already know (in their habit-brain) make them feel decidedly unsafe. This is why so many college-age people require safe spaces. Their minds cannot reconcile new ideas with what they already know. This is to the shame of our education system.
As a result, habit-brain people feel that some speech, because it makes them feel unsafe, should be prohibited. As I suggested above, people using only what they already know (habit brain) do not have free minds.
The habit brain is area 1. Here, individuals make decisions using information they already know. The decision is made in the service of the self. In other words, the individual chooses the path that serves them, or their “self”, best.
Reason, or area 2, is where understandings of life are created and maintained. Here, the individual pursues truth. Notably, decisions, in the service of the self, are never made in or with reason.
