That transition is a step toward collapse because it foreshadows the people’s cognitive collapse, leading to a decline in problem-solving. This is the cause of economic collapse: increasing dependence and less problem-solving.
More self-reliant citizens are the cure, but they are punished as the disease.
So no, it’s a “free” ride to the bottom.
If America wasn’t around to keep global productivity moving forward through technology et al., the world would collapse into dependency until, that is, the fight for survival restored individual self-reliance.
