Does the self observe the mind or emerge from it?

The individual’s mind must make connections between the frontal lobe and cortex (the SELF) to create SELF-awareness. This is what suffering accomplishes. It drives the development of these connections.

The SELF is the cortex. The individual needs the locus of electrical activity to shift (albeit momentarily, AKA free will) to the frontal lobe to “see” the cortex. At which point, the individual can make mental corrections and do their own cognitive programming. Until then, they are dependent on the thoughts of others.

This is why free will is a jib door, hidden until you open it the first time.
