The irrational have broken their brains
Quora question: Why is irrationality consistent with itself while logic is not? In his bio, the questioner calls himself an “irrational logician”.
My answer:
Well, how exactly is irrationality consistent with itself?
And, how is logic not?
Specifics would have gone a long way towards understanding your understanding of irrationality and logic.
You are drawing a unsupported conclusion, and asking others to explain your conclusion.
To develop a hypothesis, I need actual data.
I had no idea what this guy was asking. Sometimes, I just don’t. But I thought maybe there was some genuine question behind it. So I persisted.
Later, in the comments, the dialog went as follows:
MANNY’S OPENING COMMENT
Here are some basic definitions:
irrational: not logical or reasonable (this is not contradicting).
logic: a proper or reasonable way of thinking about something (this is contradicting as logic is based on assumptions—faith based ones, at that, which is irrational).
My response
Oh, I think I see. So your premise is that faith is the foundation for reason?
I was just trying to make sure I understood the reply. So I restated in my own words.
MANNY’S REPLY
No, the onus is not on me, here. The premise of logic is that logic is logical, which is irrational. 😉
My response
I thought I was repeating, albeit differently, what you said:
YOU – … logic is based on assumptions—faith based ones, at that …
ME – Oh, I think I see. So your premise is that faith is the foundation for reason?
I’m just trying to understand in detail. I am assuming the responsibility (the onus) of trying to understand so that I do not presume.
Now I am lost. The onus on me is to understand?
MANNY’S REPLY
🙂
I appreciate that. I hope I was able to clarify for your understanding.
My response
No, not really.
Yet, as you also claim to be an “irrational logician”, I am now persuaded that any answer I might produce is likely to be of little value to you.
I am sorry my friend.
The dialog was not converging.
