People are fallen (Christianity). That is, they seek to fulfill their personal wants. Nothing, with the collapse of faith, is there to develop the emotional maturity of people. It is deeply disheartening.
As a result, diabolical actors rise to exploit the immaturity of the people.
Because people are no longer consciously aware of their selfish wants, misguided and malevolent politicians are left unchecked in their pursuit of power.
