Are conspiracy theories a misnomer for conspiracy narratives?
Sometimes yes, other times no.
A true theory explains the observed: the scientific method. A theory will predict outcomes. A test can be constructed to disprove the theory. To be rational, there is no preferred theory (more true). All theories are equally true (subjective truth) until disproven.
Yes, some people also project theories, notably Marxism and contemporary “Critical Theory”. In the latter form, I do believe theories are narratives.
An example of an evil conspiracy narrative is here: Child 44 and “There is No Murder in Paradise”. Did the Soviet MGB really believe murder was a “capitalist disease”?
